If you have an online business or even just a website that you rely on for leads then you will already know the value of ranking at the top of SERP’s.

From an increase in leads to better brand exposure, the benefits are endless, but what can you do to help you rank better?

I could talk about how Zebrafish is a leading SEO agency, with over 10 years of experience running successful campaigns for clients, but I will give some pointers to nudge all you DIY marketers out there in the right direction.

Do your research

The first thing to do is research, there are several tools available to help with this such as MOZ and SEM Rush which are excellent but will cost you, and then there are free tools that will help you get started.

The Google keyword tool is an excellent starting block, use it to research the keywords you would potentially target to uncover which are most likely to create an impact, this will help you shape the next part of this DIY’ers intro strategy.

Create content

Google loves content, and the better the quality of the content you create, the better it will rank. Google measures how people engage with your content, so if it’s well written and useful, Google will notice.

While writing your content be sure to add in the keywords you want to rank for, this is from step 1. So take those keywords and start adding them to your content. It has to be natural – if you start keyword stuffing it will only work against you.

It’s important to use title tags in content, this breaks it up and means Google can index it correctly which leads to better results.

Check Your Sitemap

Every website should have a sitemap that can be submitted to Google, just like when you’re trying to find something and use Google maps, the web crawlers like to have a map of where to go – it makes their job easier.

You can submit your sitemap to Webmaster tools and check how it’s working, this means any errors should be resolved promptly – so check often.

Backlinks

Backlinks are an important part of SEO – but creating them isn’t easy, and we recommend this is where you bring in an agency.

But, you can add crosslinking to your website to improve navigation, this is where you are linking users to relevant content on your website. It improves the user journey and makes indexing better for the web crawlers.

And finally – start adding external links. This could be to sources of information or other brand’s websites. Either way, if it’s relevant it will add a positive impact to your overall rankings.
